ESTA’s 51st conference will come to town!
The Geological Society of London is looking forward to
welcoming you to the 51st ESTA conference. The main theme
of the conference will be geology in an urban environment, but
we will also focus on supporting new topics and assessment
procedures in the Eduqas and OCR A-level specifications.
On Friday afternoon there will a guided tour of the GSL to
include William Smith’s Map That Changed the World, Urban
geology walks with Ruth Siddall of University College, a world
expert on Building Stones, (See
http://londonpavementgeology.co.uk), and of course sessions
with the Eduqas and OCR teams.
Professor Nick Rogers, President of the GSL will welcome
us before supper and then later on Dr Jackie Skipper of the
Geotechnical Consulting Group will give the keynote lecture
on Geology and the Crossrail and Thames Tideway Projects.
On Saturday morning, there will be a choice of lectures and
workshops at Burlington House, home of the GSL.
Lecture topics will include: Dr Haydon Bailey’s The Real Value
of Microfossils: Financial, Forensic and Fine Art and Huw
Richards, Winner of the GSL 2017 Early Career’s Award on
exploration geology.
Workshops will include: Dr Ruth Richards’ on Teaching
Bowen’s Reaction Series, two sessions by Paul Denton of the
BGS on Building your own Lego
tm
Seismometer – and you get
to take it home, getting the most out of A level fieldwork,
maths, an engineering geology and a microfossil workshop,
and an exploration game by Pete Loader.
Professor David Siveter has made time in a very busy
schedule to talk about his lagerstatten work and
Saturday afternoon must of course feature Chris King’s ever
popular “Bring and Share” Session.

Saturday evening sees the Conference Dinner in Caffé
Concerto in Whitehall, very close to Trafalgar Square (15 mins
walk) and will follow on from the last session of the
conference).

On Sunday, Field Visits will include:

of Natural England

The geology around the Natural History Museum

London Geodiversity Partnership -A look down a hole -
if there is a suitable one at the time! - or a trip to
Gilbert’s Pit SSSI, Charlton, led by Jackie Skipper

A London walk - The lost waters of Islington: From
Farrington station to Sadlers Wells, led by Di Clements
(Author of the GA Guide to the Geology of London).
ACCOMMODATION AND TRANSPORT
Owing to the central London location this year, it has NOT
been possible to reserve any accommodation and therefore it
is your responsibility to book this yourself. We are also NOT
able to provide any transport during the conference and
to/from the field work visits and therefore you will need to use
public transport.
We are aware that delegates will have some luggage with
them, and we are arranging for it to be stored safely at/near a
field visit site whenever possible to do so.
