Strength of Rocks: Activity 2
In this experiment you will be able to test the effects of the following properties:
Grain size
Mineralogy
Porosity
Crystallinity
Write a hypothesis suggesting how each of these properties might affect the strength of the rocks.
Select suitable pairs of rocks to show the effects of the different properties and for each rock complete the Data Sheet.
You will need several copies of this Data Sheet. You will need to find out the information for the sections highlighted in grey either from textbooks or from the Properties of rocks and minerals file and you will need to calculate the range and averages.
Print several copies of the Data Sheet and use these to record your data. Describe and explain your results and relate them to your hypotheses.
